The challenge was to create an immersive, high-energy experience without turning the venue into a literal theme. The two levels needed to feel connected, with a clear journey from arrival to the main restaurant, while the design remained contemporary, operationally practical and distinctly Lucky 8.

The ground floor acts as a teaser, using warm orange and red tones before guests move upstairs into the main bar and dining room. Reflective surfaces, dark urban finishes and saturated colour create a cinematic backdrop. Digital screens show slow-moving orange jellyfish, extending movement through reflections in the ceiling, while lucky-8 cats, anime-inspired graphics and custom details add a playful pop-culture layer. The project was developed through a cross-border workflow, with custom furniture, finishes, lighting details and graphic components produced through hcreates’ supplier network in China and shipped to New Zealand for installation.
The finished space is deliberately transformative: a compact city venue that shifts from Wellington street to a neon-lit Asian nightscape. Colour, motion, graphics and material contrast heighten the sense of energy, while close coordination between the design team, fabricators and local contractor carried the concept through to installation.
