The design needed to balance two identities: the precision and practicality of a working bakery, and the warmth of a place where people could stay throughout the day. The client’s visual identity introduced a pixel concept representing individuals coming together as a community. At the same time, the mall tenancy brought practical challenges around utilities, acoustics, privacy, back-of-house operation and the desire to make the venue feel more like a standalone store.

Fieldwork operates as both a bakery and a social space. The technical requirements remain present but visually quiet, allowing the customer experience, the baking process and the brand story to come forward. The result is a comfortable, flexible venue where craft and community are expressed through the way the space is used as much as through its materials.
We combined the language of a modern workshop with references to a traditional French bakery. The pixel idea is woven through custom furniture and upholstery rather than treated as a graphic overlay. A variety of seating types creates both open communal areas and more private corners, responding to natural light and the fixed services of the site. Reflective ceiling elements help disguise utilities while adding a sense of height, and acoustic measures support the all-day dining environment. Furnishings reinforce the wider story of craft and responsibility, including chairs made from recycled coffee grounds. A custom bench in front of the counter uses pixelated fabric inspired by patchwork fields, while a post-lamp system adds another communal layer to the room.
