Sweet & Sour begins as a deliberately familiar Chinatown takeaway before revealing a darker industrial restaurant and bar hidden beyond a red beaded curtain.

The project needed to create a memorable transition between two very different atmospheres while maintaining a functional relationship between arrival, dining and bar activity.

The entrance uses Chinese lanterns, pale walls and a waving lucky cat to establish an intentionally familiar first impression. Beyond a red beaded curtain, the interior opens into a darker industrial restaurant and bar. Raised floor platforms separate diners from the standing bar crowd, while soft light glows through rustic perforated panels to create intimacy.
The contrast makes arrival part of the experience. What begins as playful and recognisable becomes atmospheric and unexpected, giving the restaurant a strong narrative while allowing dining and nightlife to coexist.
